The Inn on Mount Desert is a family owned and operated inn or boutique hotel, located on Mount Desert Island in Maine. To be more precise, in downtown Bar Harbor. This inn with 31 brand new rooms opened its doors in July 2018. Owner Stephen Coston is clearly very passionate about his property and the town that it’s in. Everything at this property shows a lot of love and eye for detail has been put into creating what is now a beautiful, welcoming and unique place to stay. It is clear the staff loves Bar Harbor and they do their absolute best to offer their guests an authentic and local experience. With their great tips and very welcome help they surely succeeded to give us exactly that.
“We’re local people but we’ve also really studied the area’s nature and its history, to try and bring as much of the wonder of the area to our guest’s experience as we possibly can. We try to be creative in delivering this in as many ways we can think of.”
– Stephen Coston
We can always appreciate unique and quirky things. Plenty of that can be found at The Inn on Mount Desert. For instance the rooms aren’t numbered but all have names that relate to the area. You also won’t get a key card but an actual physical key to your room. Upon entering the inn you will see a charming sitting area to your right. The wallpaper behind the chairs features a 2.75m tall, completely accurate nautical chart of the area. We absolutely loved this idea and it looks beautiful! Throughout the inn numerous pieces of local art and objects can be found. There’s even a couple of beautiful and historic chairs, acquired at an estate auction, that belonged to the prominent Rockefellers. Talk about uniqueness!
The Inn on Mount Desert is, in our opinion, absolutely perfectly located. From here it’s a short and easy walk to anything in downtown Bar Harbor. And with short we mean about 5-10 minutes short. Shops, restaurants, the Village Green, the Shore Path, you name it and you can walk it. Keep in mind that if you visit in the winter, like we did, a lot of the shops are closed for the season. There’s a Hannaford supermarket just around the corner from the inn which is really convenient. Right across from the supermarket you can also find a gas station. Acadia National Park is very easy to get to from The Inn on Mount Desert. Sand Beach for instance is only about a 13 minute drive. All in all we’d say the location leaves nothing more to wish for.
All 31 newly renovated rooms come with either 1 king sized bed or 2 queen sized beds. Some rooms even have a private terrace or balcony.
During our stay we were in the Bald Porcupine room which had a comfortable king sized bed and a Juliet balcony. We found the room to be quite spacious for 2 people! There was plenty of room to walk around the bed, more than enough closet space and a sitting area with a table and 2 comfortable chairs. Furthermore there was plenty of daylight and everything felt nice and clean. Personally we enjoyed the coastal feel of the room’s decor and appreciated the unique little coastal details. Even though the color palette did not necessarily scream ‘coastal’ to us, you could definitely feel the theme throughout the room.
Even though small, the bathroom was clean and had all the necessities. The neutral and light colors gave the room a very fresh feel. Also in here you could tell there was a great eye for detail to remain true to the coastal theme. One thing we noticed upon our arrival was that the bathroom was actually really cold. Then we noticed that the heat comes from an air vent in the ceiling which you can set to your own preference. Super nice for when you step out of the shower! If we had to name one con to all the pros, it would be a minor detail. Personally we always prefer using a little bottle of shower gel over a bar of soap. Only the latter was provided in this bathroom. Again, a minor personal preference.
The amenities in our room left us with nothing more to wish for. We didn’t even get around to using everything, but could definitely see how certain things would be super handy. There’s a mini fridge with a freezer section, a coffee maker and even a microwave. Hello convenience. Djamila was grateful to see a hairdryer so she didn’t have to go to sleep with wet hair. Other amenities included an iron and ironing board, a smart TV, free wifi and plenty of well placed outlets. Another cool feature was the alarm clock, which had 2 USB ports for easy charging.
The convenience wasn’t limited to our room. In fact the whole property is filled with smart and convenient amenities. To start, the inn offers free parking for guests, which is always a bonus. A beautifully decorated and inviting foyer makes you feel right at home as you sink into one of the comfy chairs by the fireplace. The Inn on Mount Desert serves a complimentary breakfast. A modest buffet offers choices of bagels, muffins, hot drinks and fresh juice. You can also get some freshly made eggs, waffles or pancakes with that. We didn’t use the elevator, the guest laundry room or the billiards room, but they’re there and handy nonetheless. The red rocking chairs on the beautiful porch or the cozy backyard are lovely spots to hang out in the summer!
Out of everywhere we’ve been, we have never had a warmer welcome than at The Inn on Mount Desert. Owner Stephen is a true local and incredibly knowledgeable about the area. Any questions you might have about the property, Bar Harbor or Acadia National Park, he’ll have your answer. Brandon helped us out on more than one occasion. He pointed out some great places to get food, we even had food delivered to the inn with his help. When we couldn’t find our way to Jordan Pond (mind you, not everything in Acadia National Park is accessible in winter) his directions finally got us there. We even spent a while just chatting and relaxing in the foyer with him. Jason prepared our breakfasts and helped us check out. Honestly, everyone was so nice and accommodating and they all know so much about the area. Couldn’t have asked for more!
Luckily we can be quite short on this topic because this inn is clean. It looked clean, it felt clean and even though this can be somewhat subjective, we noticed how nice and fresh it smelled everywhere. Another thumbs up from us!
To sum it up
Overall this is a terrific place to stay. If we’d have to name some cons it would be some minor ones, definitely nothing to convince us to go elsewhere. For instance there’s no lunch or dinner service, which would have been handy. Then again there are plenty of great options in downtown Bar Harbor. Like we mentioned earlier, we personally prefer a mini shower gel over the bar of soap. The curtains in our room let in some light, we think we were right next to some exterior lights. Nothing major though. Lastly, the housekeeping was fine, yet the only thing that looked touched was the bed. Which had been neatly made again. We did not request our towels to be changed so maybe that’s why they were not folded. Again, nothing major because the room was clean to begin with.
Now to name the obvious pros for this charming boutique hotel; the location, super helpful staff, spacious and clean rooms, good amenities and though modest, a complimentary breakfast. Besides that we feel that the unique details The Inn on Mount Desert offers with their local art, the cozy foyer and the totally awesome nook with the custom made nautical chart, really add something to this inn. It has character, it has charm, it has history and yet it is brand new. So, if you’re looking for a place to stay on Mount Desert Island, look no further! Go and enjoy all that Bar Harbor has to offer and immerse yourself in nature by hiking one of the many trails in Acadia National Park. End the day in comfort with a friendly chat by the fireplace before you drift off into a peaceful sleep. Welcome to The Inn on Mount Desert.
